Some of the fabric I ordered has come! When I ship to my customer tomorrow I’ll pick it up then. Thanks Sharla! Sharla has a oh so wonderful etsy shop with all sorts of goodies in it.

New Ideas

leaf-stencil-purpleWell, I didn’t want a whole week to go by without blogging so even though I’m too tired right now to take and upload pictures I thought I’d let you know what’s been going on. I designed some cute little (12ins) dolls over at my other blog: www.rosecottagedolls.wordpress.com , I’m hoping to have them in my online store very soon, I know I keep wailing about that but I will be opening soon, I’m waiting on my stamps and they are on their way, yay! So if you want to see what they look like you can head over there. I finally decided to make some bags with palm tree designed fabric lining. I bought some in blue, it has a batik kind of look to it, I’m trying to see how many bags i can line with one yard of the fabric. For now the outer fabric, which is canvas, is free, I found a load of it in an old suitcase I dug out last month. Though I did check the price in town for future reference. So they will be cream canvas on the outside and a blue batik kind of palm tree design on the inside. I’m putting the word ‘Barbados’ on the outside with a palm tree applique. I’m thinking they will make great souvenirs! I did make the bucket bags I’d mentioned before, they came out quite nicely, I will add them to this post in the morning, I’m actually using them for my supplies. Tomorrow I’ll be taking some dolls to the P. O to get them weighed for future shipping internationally, so I can price them properly in my shop. My pieces of embroidery will weigh less than a doll so that should be ok. I’m not sure about the bunting I will be making though. I still have to get the sizes and prices organized, plus the whole concept of custom orders for birthdays and other celebrations, not to mention names. I bought a second hand book called ‘We Live Here’ by a well know artist here called Gina Foster. It’s actually a children’s book with around half a dozen pictures of various barbadian animals, the great thing is it’s not a print, it is the original watercolors acrylics by this artist, in a book! So cool! I bought it for USD$0.50 too, what a steal! 🙂 The pictures would look great framed individually and put up in a nursery or a playroom. The original price was USD$30 so I got a real bargain, it’s in really good condition too. I did try my hand at a tiny waldorf doll head too, I must say I really love the technique, and it’s not as scary as I thought it would be. I really need to buy some stockinette though, I saw some at etsy for a very reasonable price too, That will have to wait though, I’m trying to use what I have now and I know I can make a lot of things with what I have resent bought and what I had before. All I really need now is bubble wrap lined envelopes… and that’s all. I forget to mention… I made some seahorse keyrings out of felt too, ooh and a little brown monkey keyring! Not sure why the monkey, I really don’t care for monkeys much, especially the ones that visit my garden and have eaten all my peas! A whole family of around eight or so, too! Sob! I will post picture tomorrow, cus you have to see the funny little wicket, bails and ball I made yesterday too. Why? I don’t know, just for fun I guess. 🙂 Well, I’d better get some sleep, I have a lot to do tomorrow.

Bucket Bags & Embroidery

leaf-stencil-redI’m tired now, I went out today to buy yet more fabric, I think I have everything now… except transfer paper, I can’t find any anywhere, I may have to order it online or get someone in the UK to fedex me some. I need it bad, it will really make life so much easier, especially with my embroidery.

I bought some 100% white stripe on white linen the other day too. I just had to have it, it was so nice. I could picture my embroidery stitches covering it. I was reading some Aesop’s Fables and some Hans Christian Anderson stories online the other day, I found some really beautiful quotes and expressions in them, so I took some of them and filed them away, I hope to use them in my embroidered wall art.

I would really like to hurry up and get my Etsy shop stocked already! But I’m still faffing around trying to sort out the shipping costs for the items for sale. Also, in an effort to get organized I am going to be making some bucket bags tomorrow, I have some canvas and I bought some fine weave green burlap (and some loose weave natural burlap, that scares me!), I’ll post some pictures… if they turn out ok! 🙂

Mmm, what else? Ah, yes. If you want to know what’s going on in my doll making world, you can visit my doll making blog. And go visit my Flickr pictures too, if you have time.

Chat soon, bye!

New Bag

leaf-stencil-yellowWell, I completed the first item on my list of things to do. I made what I call an hibiscus bag. I wasn’t sure whether to use a hummingbird or a sand dollar design, I finally went with the hibiscus design. It’s quite a simple design and very easy to embroider. I sandwiched interfacing between the bag fabric and the lining fabric, so when it came to embroidering the design I didn’t miss my embroidery hoop at all, the design didn’t pull or pucker at all.

Butterfly BoxesDon’t you just LOVE boxes and containers to put your treasures in? I forgot about these and re-discovered them in a dark corner, whatever shall I put in them? They nest inside each other and have butterflies hanging off them. I bought them for just 2 pounds in the UK, and I love purple!

I’m thinking to make some bucket bags to store my knitting yarn and various other bulky need-to-hand items for my crafting. I’m thinking that this fabric and some lightweight cream colored canvas I found in an old suitcase will be ideal.

Blue Batik Design

Well, that’s enough chat for today, I have to go do some webdesign work. Have a great day!

Spring things to do

leaf-stencil-red1I thought a good and positive start to the beautiful month of May would be to list all the things I would like to do now through to late summer.

1. Make a new bag just for me using the new pattern I drafted. The fabric I have chosen is a kind of oatmeal colored linen, and a red gingham with tiny flower all over for the lining. It will have a personalized embroidered decoration on the front pocket. I absolutely LOVE the design, let’s just hope it turns out alright… sigh!

Mon. May 04 – DONE! YAY! I will post a picture in Tuesday’s post.

2. Make some wall art using fabric (applique) with this saying incorporated into it: Let me be often standing now on Faith’s lofty eminences. Looking for the rising Sun that is to set no more in weeping clouds. Life has been hard this past year and a friend sent me that saying to cheer me up. I need to make something beautiful so I can display that thought and be encouraged.

3. Embroider set of linen handkerchiefs. I love to embroider, and this would be a great (small) project.

4. Make a sunny new dress or two to celebrate… being me! The best way to be creatively you is to make it yourself, there’s something so satisfying about making your own treasures from scratch; choosing the fabric, thinking up the style and …. doing it and wearing it. My dad was a tailor and his mother was what they called in those days a seamstress. I grew up watching my dad in the midst of his patterns and huge pairs scissors, and bolts of fabric, and pins and buttons and sewing machines and all kinds of notions.

5. Start making some simple plush toys, just for the fun of it!

I spotted these at fabric.com, my favorite colors these days are purple, lime green and orange. These are so pretty to me, they make me feel so happy! : )
