Rose Cottage Handmade

Handmade Dolls, Puppets and lovely things!

Busy, busy…

I’ve been working quite hard this past few weeks. Here’s a list of interesting things I’ve made:

Mannequin Doll – to be a pattern

A Mannequin Doll, it will be sold as a pattern, it’s about as proportionally correct as I could make it. With this pattern you can make many, many dolls.

Jemima - A 'Tilda-style' Doll
Tilda Style Doll, I really enjoyed making this pattern. It is similar to the traditional ‘Tilda’ doll but the head shape is more 3d and the feet too. I’ve made some really nice clothes and accessories for this doll too.

Barn Owl
Barn Owl, it took a lot of work and adjustments to make this owl, I love it! It still has to be edited some more because the body is too lean, but not bad for a first attempt.

Forest Deer Herd

Forest Deer Herd

Forest Deer, simple and lovely, they look great in a herd and are pose-able too.

I’m making patterns for felt trees too.

To Do List

Figured I’d better make a list of everything I hope to complete this week.

leaf-stencil-red11. Finish and mail off bunting for customer.

leaf-stencil-red12. Start to design a cartoonish animal puppet with an old and seriously pilled dark green fleece blanket I have lying around.

leaf-stencil-red13. Now that September is here, I really need to get organized for the christmas season. I need to put together my new ideas for garlands, dolls and gingerbread men, and such like.

leaf-stencil-red14. Play patio tennis with my son, Jacob, and actually win!

leaf-stencil-red15. Start making time to relax and read some vintage children’s books that I used to LOVE as a child.

leaf-stencil-red16. And, design the measurements for some patio seating so I can be outside more.

leaf-stencil-red17. Last but not least, smile and laugh more, be thankful for everything I have.

Keyring Dolls, almost finished

These are another cute creation of mine. When completed they display the words “I heart Barbados” … with a picture of a heart not the word, lol. They also have a ring attached to the yellow ribbon you see at the top, so you can add them to a bag or a keyring, etc. Yes, they’re in the shop too.

New Ideas

leaf-stencil-purpleWell, I didn’t want a whole week to go by without blogging so even though I’m too tired right now to take and upload pictures I thought I’d let you know what’s been going on. I designed some cute little (12ins) dolls over at my other blog: www.rosecottagedolls.wordpress.com , I’m hoping to have them in my online store very soon, I know I keep wailing about that but I will be opening soon, I’m waiting on my stamps and they are on their way, yay! So if you want to see what they look like you can head over there. I finally decided to make some bags with palm tree designed fabric lining. I bought some in blue, it has a batik kind of look to it, I’m trying to see how many bags i can line with one yard of the fabric. For now the outer fabric, which is canvas, is free, I found a load of it in an old suitcase I dug out last month. Though I did check the price in town for future reference. So they will be cream canvas on the outside and a blue batik kind of palm tree design on the inside. I’m putting the word ‘Barbados’ on the outside with a palm tree applique. I’m thinking they will make great souvenirs! I did make the bucket bags I’d mentioned before, they came out quite nicely, I will add them to this post in the morning, I’m actually using them for my supplies. Tomorrow I’ll be taking some dolls to the P. O to get them weighed for future shipping internationally, so I can price them properly in my shop. My pieces of embroidery will weigh less than a doll so that should be ok. I’m not sure about the bunting I will be making though. I still have to get the sizes and prices organized, plus the whole concept of custom orders for birthdays and other celebrations, not to mention names. I bought a second hand book called ‘We Live Here’ by a well know artist here called Gina Foster. It’s actually a children’s book with around half a dozen pictures of various barbadian animals, the great thing is it’s not a print, it is the original watercolors acrylics by this artist, in a book! So cool! I bought it for USD$0.50 too, what a steal! 🙂 The pictures would look great framed individually and put up in a nursery or a playroom. The original price was USD$30 so I got a real bargain, it’s in really good condition too. I did try my hand at a tiny waldorf doll head too, I must say I really love the technique, and it’s not as scary as I thought it would be. I really need to buy some stockinette though, I saw some at etsy for a very reasonable price too, That will have to wait though, I’m trying to use what I have now and I know I can make a lot of things with what I have resent bought and what I had before. All I really need now is bubble wrap lined envelopes… and that’s all. I forget to mention… I made some seahorse keyrings out of felt too, ooh and a little brown monkey keyring! Not sure why the monkey, I really don’t care for monkeys much, especially the ones that visit my garden and have eaten all my peas! A whole family of around eight or so, too! Sob! I will post picture tomorrow, cus you have to see the funny little wicket, bails and ball I made yesterday too. Why? I don’t know, just for fun I guess. 🙂 Well, I’d better get some sleep, I have a lot to do tomorrow.

Bucket Bags & Embroidery

leaf-stencil-redI’m tired now, I went out today to buy yet more fabric, I think I have everything now… except transfer paper, I can’t find any anywhere, I may have to order it online or get someone in the UK to fedex me some. I need it bad, it will really make life so much easier, especially with my embroidery.

I bought some 100% white stripe on white linen the other day too. I just had to have it, it was so nice. I could picture my embroidery stitches covering it. I was reading some Aesop’s Fables and some Hans Christian Anderson stories online the other day, I found some really beautiful quotes and expressions in them, so I took some of them and filed them away, I hope to use them in my embroidered wall art.

I would really like to hurry up and get my Etsy shop stocked already! But I’m still faffing around trying to sort out the shipping costs for the items for sale. Also, in an effort to get organized I am going to be making some bucket bags tomorrow, I have some canvas and I bought some fine weave green burlap (and some loose weave natural burlap, that scares me!), I’ll post some pictures… if they turn out ok! 🙂

Mmm, what else? Ah, yes. If you want to know what’s going on in my doll making world, you can visit my doll making blog. And go visit my Flickr pictures too, if you have time.

Chat soon, bye!
